The time has come to renovate the office of the treasurer. Work began over the summer, with big plans in mind. Construction is not complete; however, plans include new paint for the walls, ceiling and safe; crown molding around the office; and a new Pergo floor. The safe has been fully repaired and is in use to keep valuable records and money. Construction will be complete by Christmas; expect to see pictures in the spring issue.
This year we have 33 in-house brothers. Most rooms have been converted to triples; however, the third-floor storage space of the lockers and sleeping quarters of the dorm allow second-floor rooms to remain comfortable. Having 33 in-house brothers also affords us one of the bigger budgets in recent years. With the extra money, we have been able to increase our spending in certain areas. Salaries for house positions have been increased for the first time in a while, including a salary for our scholarship chair and RSE historian.
Thanks to Matt Schumaker and the Class of 2003, the junior members have constructed one of two additional trophy cases for our trophy hall. This trophy case, located next to the treasurer’s office, holds the lacrosse stick donated by Rudy Bergfield ’49. This stick holds a prestigious autograph by RPI’s very own Ned Harkness, famous lacrosse coach.
The creation of the “RSE Depot” merchandise store has allocated a place in the budget to purchase RSE-related material every semester. Our stockpile currently contains lettered shirts, hats, mugs, lithographs, brother pins and RSE key chains. These items are available to the junior members and RSE alumni in order to maintain society spirit. Merchandise can be purchased by visiting the clubhouse and is coming soon to www.RSEJM.org.
In addition to the changes already taken place, many are in the works. In the future, look for reports regarding the hanging of composites. The trophy hall, once home to seven composites, has been renovated to hold 10 using a secure universal hanging method. My goal is to hang the photographic history of RSE all over the first floor, including the living room and dining room areas. We are in need of composites from before the ’50s to complete our records. If you have knowledge of an 11x17 composite from that era, please contact me.
I look forward to hearing comments from alumni; keep in touch.
